We have moved... We actually move a couple of months ago but things have been so hectic that there just hasn't been time to write about it. In an effort to magnify the pain and suffering of the move, I've decided that we need to "Simplify and Organize".
I've been reading sites like Uncluterer, Zenhabits and LifeHack.org Habits for some time now and we finally took on the challenge. My office has shrunk from a full 12" x 15" bedroom to half of a 10" x 8" bedroom. All by implementing two little words that have a far reaching meaning... Simplify and Organize. I used to have a four drive external hard drive enclosure with 4 old drives in it for mass storage; gone! I replaced them with one 500Gb drive and put it internal in my PC. I used to have a second PC that I ran various flavors of Linux on with a KVM switch box to one of my monitors; gone! I move from Windows XP to Ubuntu Linux (more on that another time) and tossed the old PC and KVM switch box. I used to have a 8' X 4' three sided desk with hutch; gone! I pulled my 3' X 5' single sided desk that I had from my old corporate apartment out of storage and put it in the new office. I also used to have boxes of used computer parts, shelves of old manuals and a cubic metric ton of cables; gone! I realized some time ago that having all of the stuff was worthless. I had so much of it that I could never find want I needed and I'd have to go and buy a new what-ever-it-was that I needed anyway. There are many other areas where we have cut, trimmed, pruned and paired down that I won't go into in this post but man it feels good. I'll leave you with a couple of words of wisdom that I'm sure I didn't come up with... if you haven't used something in a month, three months, a year; you don't need it. Why do you have it? Get rid of it.
